The Benefits of Asphalt Surfacing
You may be wondering if asphalt is the right choice for your property. It’s a highly versatile material and is the perfect solution for a wide range of applications. Like tarmac, asphalt is often used to surface areas expecting larger volumes of traffic. However, it can also be a quality finish for residential surface renewal.
The main benefits of using asphalt include:
- Asphalt is safe, smooth, and durable.
- The decorative resin-coated chippings are available in a range of different colours.
- Built from multiple layers, it is fast to construct and maintain.
- It costs less to construct and maintain than many alternative surface options.
- It provides a smooth and quiet ride with low rolling resistance.
- General care and management of asphalt surfaces is low.
- Asphalt is fast becoming the go-to sustainable surface choice.
If you want to find out more about asphalt and how it could benefit your project, then we would be happy to tell you more. Remember, you can check out some of our past projects in our online galleries on each service page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the frequently asked questions we often receive from our customers. We’ve provided clear answers to help you better understand our surfacing materials, installation processes, and how to maintain a long-lasting finish.
While often used interchangeably in everyday speech, asphalt generally refers to a flexible pavement system with aggregate bound by bitumen, and it offers excellent durability, flexibility under load, and crack resistance. Tarmac is a specific form combining tar and macadam. In practice, modern asphalt is more common for heavy-duty surfacing. Choosing between them depends on load, climate, and intended use.
The required thickness depends on loading and usage. For example, driveways may need 50–75 mm, light-use car parks 75–100 mm, and roads or heavy-use areas 150 mm or more (including base layers). Proper base preparation and load calculations govern final thickness.
In many cases, it’s possible to re-profile or mill small sections, add a binding overlay, or cut and regrade edges to introduce proper fall/slope. We evaluate the existing base and surface structure and propose measures (such as tapered overlays, slot drains) to ensure water runs off properly.
