We’re Here to Help!

Tar and chip driveways in Norfolk, just like any other surface, can show signs of wear and tear over time. Summer is the ideal time to carry out repairs on your tar and chip drive – and we’re here to talk you through some of the jobs that you can carry out yourself. As a leading expert in tar and chip driveway installation, it’s safe to say that we know our stuff.

Repairing Loose Stones

If you notice that stones are coming loose from your driveway, this can be a straightforward fix. Sweep the area to remove any debris and loose stones that haven’t come off yet. If needed, use a pressure washer to ensure a really clean surface. Then apply a thin layer of tar or bitumen emulsion over the area where the stones have come loose. While the tar is still tacky, spread a new layer of aggregate over the area. Ensure an even distribution for a consistent look. You should press the stones into the tar, and then allow the repaired area to cure for a few days before driving on it.

Filling Cracks

Small cracks can allow water to penetrate the surface and cause further damage, so it’s important to address them quickly. Remove any dirt or debris from the cracks, and then use an asphalt patch or cold patch compound to fill the cracks. Use a trowel to smooth the surface and ensure it is level with the rest of the driveway for a smooth finish. Then press the patch material firmly into the crack – the back of a shovel works well for this if you don’t have a specialist tool. For a great finish, sprinkle a small amount of loose aggregate over the patched area to help it blend in with the rest of the driveway.

Preventative Maintenance

To prolong the life of your tar and chip driveway, you should take a proactive approach when it comes to maintenance. It’s essential to keep the surface clean by sweeping away debris and washing the driveway from time to time. It’s vital to address small issues as soon as possible as well. Using our above advice, take the time to repair cracks and loose stones as soon as you notice them to prevent more significant problems from developing.
